Learn About Dogs at The Dog Show
A long time ago my father used to show a beautiful Komondor named “Indo”, owned by Dr. Marion Levy, of Princeton University. At the time Komondorok were a very rare breed to be seen in Boston. These dogs are originally bred in Hungary for the task of guarding livestock. These are a very friendly, intelligent dogs with a very unique coat, similar to a janitorial mop. The picture for the Boston Globe was taken at the Boston dog shows in 1972 while Ingo sat on my fathers grooming table waiting to go in the ring.
You might wonder how one grooms a Komondor? What are they like to live with? The list of questions can go on just as the list of different breeds of dogs. These are good reasons to go to Dog Shows and fortunately there are plenty of great dog show worth going to around Boston.
Some AKC dog shows have a Meet The Breeds event, giving people a chance to meet different types of dogs they may be interested in as well as talk to the people who know them best. Even if there is not a meet the breed event any dog show presents a great opportunity for people to learn more about the needs of these different breed types. Even if you have a glorious mutt, this is a way to learn more about what makes your dog tick.
However, here is a listing of the upcoming dog shows in the Boston area.
Dog show people are a blast to hang out with. I often remark that the movie “Best in Show” is really a documentary not a comedy as most would guess. Just be careful or you might be put to work if you are caught standing around with nothing to do.
Remember if you are heading to a dog show only dog which are entered in the show are allowed. It would be a shame to travel the entire way to find your dog needs to stay in the car.
I started going to the Boston Dog Shows (Bay Colony Dog Shows) before I could walk. The dog show in Boston were always some of my favorites, as my father and I would head to the Union Oyster House while we were in town. My chin barely made it over the bar and the dumb waiter was a huge hit.
The Bay Colony Dog Shows also known as the Boston dogs Shows were moved to Rhode Island this year. I for one was sad to see the change.
