When you live with a dog in a city like Boston, odds are you will be living in an apartment or condo and very close to your neighbors. One of the fastest ways to be kicked to the street is to have your dog barking their heads off while they are home alone. It does not matter if you are renting an apartment or own your condo. Both property management companies and condo associations have the power to evict your dog for being a nuisance. Here are some tips to help before it comes to choosing between your home or your dog.

If you feel completely in over your head with your barking dog, go straight to one of the many dog trainers or animal behaviorists. For my Boston readers, I have created some suggestions at the end of this article. Otherwise, here are some tips to help you stop your dog from excessively barking or whining while left home alone.
Unload your loaded dog, before you go... "Go where?" you ask. Anywhere, walking or hiking in public parks, the city sidewalks, an outdoor cafe in the South End, the list is endless. If you give your dog a moment to go to the bathroom in advance, you can save yourself the hassle of carrying around a bag of poop or an awkward moment on a busy sidewalk. If you think I am joking, think about this:

Have you ever watched a dog show? Have you ever noticed that the dogs almost never seem to go to the bathroom in the ring? If they do, I can guarantee the other handlers are muttering "amateur" towards the offending handler. After all it's not rocket science, dogs have needs and with a little planning you can make both your lives easier. "Unload the loaded dog" may be some of the best advice I can offer dog owners living in a city like Boston.
I have often wondered why it is my dog is so smart, unless of course I happen to be shaking my head while calling him a knucklehead. Well, today I decided to call someone in the know, I called Marc Hauser, Ph.D. at the Canine Cognition Lab of Harvard University to learn more about how my dog's mind works.

It turns out you don't need to own a Poodle to have a dog that can figure things out for themselves. I, like many others, have always believed that certain breeds were smarter than others. It turns out this may not be true. There are other factors that Dr. Hauser and his team have noticed, including dogs that excel while being run through a series of fun tests/games, which measures the spontaneous thought process of your dog, or a dog's ability to remember and figure things out for himself.

Continue reading: Getting Into The Mind of Your Dog

Find a dog friendly Boston at Fido Loves
