As the morning fog was lifting from the Boston skyline, Margie woke both our dog Moose and I to go for a run at Castle Island in South Boston. Well, they would run and I would enjoy a leisurely walk while taking pictures of Margie and the dog.
Either way, Castle island in South Boston is a beautiful place to get a little exercise with your dog. Most of the areas (particularly around the fort) require your dog to be on a leash. There are some nooks where you will find a few well behaved dogs off-leash playing fetch with their owners. Castle Island is surrounded by water and beaches where you can let your dog go for a swim, depending on the time of day and year.
Inside the castle or more accurately Fort Independence is sadly off limits to dogs. The closest we could get to going inside was captured in the photograph attached to this article. The area around Fort Independence is networked with pathways which extend around the island and down to the seawall. The views of Boston Harbor from Castle Island are simply stunning and make this a fantastic place to take your dog for a walk or a long run.
Castle Island is connected to Pleasure Bay with walkways that run around the enclosed bay and then connect to the beach front sidewalks heading to Carson Beach. With a little planning, you can easily create a 5-10 mile run with your dog along the South Boston Waterfront. You will not be alone as this is a very popular area for running in Boston.
