It used to be Yappy Hour at the Liberty Hotel, but the weekly event for Boston dog owners in 2010 is "Yappier Hour".  This canine spin on Happy hour will be held 5-7 pm each Wednesday through the summer and will continue into the fall as long as weather permits. Just think cocktails and dogtails at the swank Liberty Hotel's enclosed courtyard called The Yard. To think when this place was a city jail, residents used to get their exercise in this yard.

The very pet friendly Liberty Hotel sets up an outside bar in "The Yard", which is an enclosed courtyard for dogs and their owners. Drinks and appetizers were served among a unique mix of romping pooches and Bostonians. This is one of my favorite events for meeting other dog owners, enjoying a good cocktail and letting the dogs play in a great setting. There are a few additions to Yappier Hour this year as well.

Dogs living in Boston, need a set of special skills as they navigate the mean streets of Boston. Well, OK, the streets are not that mean, but to a young pup or dog new to the city, the streets can be pretty intimidating. In addition to the hustle and bustle of cars and people, your dog will cross paths with many other dogs. For many dog owners, these quick meet and greets with other dogs can be challenging, as some dogs can be aggressive with each other without apparent reason. You can rest assured there is always a reason. The owners of Pawsh have organized a couple of training sessions on Tuesday March 30th, 2010 to get you and your Boston dog on the right path to acclimating your dog to life in the city of Boston.   Â

Thursday Night January 28th from 6 pm to 7:30 pm, there will be an after work party for people who love pets in the Seaport District organized by MSPCA-Angell and sponsored by Upper Crust Pizza and The Harpoon Brewery.  Going out on a Thursday Night after work is so much better when you are standing in a room full of people with a common interest. Dogs and yes, cats, as it was recently pointed out to me that cats are wonderful pets as well. (See, I was listening)

Quickly coming up the weekend of January 16-17 th is the Myopia Sled Dog Races in Hamilton MA. You can expect more than 200 dogs at this event. With that in mind only dogs which are competing are invited much like any dog show you would go to. But spectators are invited and the cost is nothing, zilch.

It is the Holiday Season and I am looking forward to attending some pet friendly holiday events in Boston where my dog is welcome as well. During Halloween we attended some fantastic parades and benefits for not just the Boston dog world but other causes which deserve attention too.

This post will be continually updated as we become aware of more tree lighting ceremonies, pet photo shoots with Santa, Christmas parties and if I can find a Hanukkah party where dogs are invited or to benefit a dog related cause in Boston. A long time ago my father used to show a beautiful Komondor named "Indo", owned by Dr. Marion Levy, of Princeton University. At the time Komondorok were a very rare breed to be seen in Boston. These dogs are originally bred in Hungary for the task of guarding livestock. These are a very friendly, intelligent dogs with a very unique coat, similar to a janitorial mop. The picture for the Boston Globe was taken at the Boston dog shows in 1972 while Ingo sat on my fathers grooming table waiting to go in the ring.

You might wonder how one grooms a Komondor? What are they like to live with? The list of questions can go on just as the list of different breeds of dogs. These are good reasons to go to Dog Shows and fortunately there are plenty of great dog show worth going to around Boston.

Halloween is upon us and the pet parades began with the Divas Unleashed 2009, Annual Halloween Pet Parade and Fashion Show. After meeting at the Doggie Day Play Center in the South End of Boston, a fantastic group of costume clad dogs and owners paraded with style into the heart of the Boston Common. Led by a marching band this mob of Divas was impossible not to notice.
