Our Boston dog, who spent his puppyhood as a beach dog on Nantucket, was shaking with excitement when we pulled into the parking lot at Crane Beach. The salty ocean breeze, the sounds of talkative seagulls and the promise of saltwater meeting sand is as intoxicating to my dog as is myself. If you love going to the beach as much as we do, take a moment to learn more about Crane Beach, the Green Dog program and enjoy a bunch of pictures of dogs playing on the beach.

As I sat in the parking lot of the MSPCA-Angell gathering my camera, notebook, and pen; I could not help wondering how they could need such a big building. I had been offered a tour of the facility and an opportunity to meet some of the people who make the MSPCA-Angell happen. For the life of me, I could not imagine what was behind the doors to this old seminary. I share below what I learned about an incredible organization of people with the desire to help others, animals being the forefront of their efforts.    Â

We found ourselves looking for a place near Boston where we could spend some quality time with the dog; without the dog park. Sometimes, the dog park, which is perfect for letting your Boston dog socialize with other dogs, can be a bit much. This past weekend, we had one of those moments where we just wanted to find a quiet place for some quality family time, dog included.

Funny enough, we found Boston’s largest remaining salt marsh in one of the most unexpected places; East Boston. Right in the middle of a well developed area is the Belle Isle Salt Marsh Reservation. There you will find 241 acres of trails, sea grass, saltwater and views of Boston in the distance.  We had found a relatively unused place to play with the dog.

The other night the DCR held a trail planning meeting regarding the Middlesex Fells Reservation which includes the area called Sheepfold; a very popular spot for Bostonians to let their dogs run off-leash.  The DCR recognizes visitors using the Fells for mountain biking, hiking and dog walking has increased dramatically in recent years.  Recently, they have had consultants in the park identifying trails, intersections, condition and use in order to create an inventory and better adjust resources to care and support the public use.

The initial meeting drew about 150 people, which I just attended, from various groups who have an interest in how the DCR manages the Middlesex Fells. To be honest, I am impressed by the DCR for involving the general public in the planning process.  Clearly those working for the DCR have not seen the show “Parks and Recreation” on NBC. Although, surprisingly, the public rose above just yelling at each other; most of the time.

Pack the ski gear, load the car and head North, just don’t forget to bring the dog. Because this New England ski trip is pet friendly not just pet tolerant. Too many times in the past we have cut our ski trips short because of the dog. This weekend that changed when we drove into Jackson NH with our dog’s head happily hanging out the window. Jackson sits in the center of New Hampshire’s ski country and happens to have one of the most pet friendly bed and breakfast inns I have come across thus far. So pack your snowshoes, skis, snowboards or cross-country gear because here is a dog friendly New England winter vacation for the “Whole Family”.

Thursday Night January 28th from 6 pm to 7:30 pm, there will be an after work party for people who love pets in the Seaport District organized by MSPCA-Angell and sponsored by Upper Crust Pizza and The Harpoon Brewery.  Going out on a Thursday Night after work is so much better when you are standing in a room full of people with a common interest. Dogs and yes, cats, as it was recently pointed out to me that cats are wonderful pets as well. (See, I was listening)

Beacon Hill might be one of Boston’s most picturesque neighborhoods with cobblestone streets, gas lighting and historic homes. Nestled on Charles Street you will find a cute little shop called Four Preppy Paws. This is not a huge dog boutique but they have a nice selection of unique dog toys, accessories and treats. If you find yourself lost on the Hill you can ask any one of the many locals out for a walk with their dogs for directions as Heidi Barraza and her staff have become a fantastic resource for this Bostonian community.
