English Bulldog at Petes Park in the South End of Boston

Meet-Up with Other Dogs Like Yours

While out taking my dog Moose for a walk in the Navy Yard, I learned about an Old English Bulldog group that was going to “Meet Up” at Peters Park.  Every month a group of Bulldog owners from around Boston get together to let their dogs play while they swap stories and information each has learned about their unique breed.  There are other breed-specific groups that get together each month as well, in fact, I think this opportunity for people to get together and discuss a common interest is absolutely fantastic and watching a gigantic pack of Bulldogs play together is also incredible.

Getting a Dog?

I would argue this… Even if you do not own an English Bulldog or any other breed for that matter, but are considering one,  it behooves you to catch up with a group of owners and find out in advance what is in store for you.  The real cost of ownership is sometimes much more than a cute face.  All breeds, mixes or all out mutts have their quirks.  They are in fact dogs after all.

New to Boston?

If you just moved to Boston this is another fantastic resource as well.  You will be able to quickly get the inside scoop of who to see for what in your area.  This is essential for finding an appropriate veterinarian, dog walker, sitter, etc.  In fact, meeting up with some like-minded people is a great way to make new friends when you move to Boston.  Some people say Bostonians are a little tough, I don’t, I’m just saying… dogs connect you to some pretty amazing people.

The Old English Bulldog Play Group

I have to say, watching a bunch of Old English Bulldogs playing together is hysterical.  They were like a mob of bulldozers.  It seemed like great fun for the dogs as they were all similar in play capabilities . . . meaning a Great Dane was not there flipping them over to get a better look.  I have to imagine a playgroup of Boston Terriers would be fun to watch as well.

I should mention that at Peters Park they have a dog area for smaller dogs and during Sunday’s Old English Bulldog Meet-up, there was a second play group of French Bulldogs holding court in that area.

How to Find a Play Group

The Bulldog play groups get together on www.meetup.com. The website seems to work well for scheduling play groups and you will find a discussion about issues concerning the breed.

At meetup.com here is a link to all the Boston Dog Groups within a 25 mile radius of the city

Jay – loved reading about the Meet-Up Groups. Also liked your suggestion that people thinking of getting a dog investigate a breed before getting one. Not every breed will fit into your lifestyle, resulting in an unhappy ending for both owner and (most importantly) the dog – simply because the individual didn’t take the time to learn about the breed ahead of time. DO YOUR HOMEWORK – or don’t get a dog. It’s a big responsibility and commitment.

It’s so great to see that groups are out there getting together and socializing! I joined New England Trail Dogs immediately, thanks! Local Cape Cod ones aren’t very active in holding meet-ups, but I’ll take this as a reminder to get the ball (tee hee) rolling!
